Katie is a PhD student in the Biological and Biomedical Sciences Program at Harvard Medical School. As an undergraduate student at Dickinson College, Katie evaluated the role of BCL2A1 in the PMA-induced apoptosis of acute myeloid leukemia cells. Following graduation, she worked as a research assistant in Leonard Zon's laboratory at Boston Children's Hospital where she identified novel compounds for the treatment of Diamond Blackfan anemia. Now, Katie works in Carla Kim's laboratory evaluating injury-associated tumor-mesenchymal interactions in lung adenocarcinoma. Outside of the lab, Katie enjoys gardening and crafting.

Katie joined the LCBC Student Steering Committee to help strengthen the community through team-building opportunities and student-led resources, such as PQE practice sessions.



 

 

 



 

   

**If you weren’t a scientist, what would you be?** I have always loved animals, so I would likely be working with them in some capacity, whether as a veterinarian or with an animal rescue organization.

**What is your favorite book?** My favorite book is *Why Zebras Don’t Get Ulcers* by Robert Sapolsky. This book changed the way I approach life and think about stress.

**What is your favorite form of exercise?** I love yoga and am working toward earning my yoga instructor certification.

**If you could be on any game show, which would you choose?** I would be on *Survivor*! My dad and I watched it together when I was growing up, and I think it would be so much fun for us to do it together.

**What’s your go-to coffee/tea order?** A salted caramel iced latte!

**City or Countryside?** Definitely the countryside! I love being surrounded by nature and appreciate the serenity that comes with it.

**Who inspires you?** I am inspired by my family, who have worked incredibly hard to support me throughout my scientific career. I am also inspired by my PI, Carla, and the way she balances her many responsibilities to her family, lab, and community while remaining deeply committed to each.
