Landry Cancer Biology Consortium

LANDRY CANCER BIOLOGY CONSORTIUM

The Landry Cancer Biology Consortium was created to realize the full potential of the Harvard-wide network of scientists for future contributions to cancer research. The Consortium was officially recognized by a unanimous vote of the Graduate Policy Committee of the Harvard Kenneth C. Griffin Graduate School of Arts and Sciences in December 2014, and was subsequently approved by the Harvard Integrated Life Sciences (HILS) Faculty Committee in February 2015.

The consortium is now officially designated as a graduate consortium in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences (GSAS) and is placed under the HILS umbrella.

At Harvard, cancer research is conducted in more than a dozen places, including but not limited to: Harvard University, Harvard Medical School, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, The Broad Institute, Boston Children’s Hospital, Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, and Massachusetts General Hospital

Drawing from these various institutions and a dozen different graduate programs, the Landry Cancer Biology Consortium is truly a consortium bringing together students and faculty mentors at these institutions to elevate the community as a whole. The effect is not additive; it is exponential.

This work is made possible by the generous support to Harvard Faculty of Arts and Sciences of the late C. Kevin Landry and his family, colleagues, and friends. This gift represents a transformative investment in some of the best and brightest young minds in cancer biology. Through the Landry Cancer Biology Consortium, Harvard is leveraging the strength of its scientific community to encourage new breakthroughs in cancer research and treatment.

Goal

The overarching goal of the Landry Cancer Biology Consortium is to provide a framework for multidisciplinary approaches to cancer and expose a broader range of minds at every level of training to the challenges of cancer research and thus achieve a more multidisciplinary perspective – spurring the kind of innovative, non-traditional ideas that often result from recruiting new kinds of expertise.

C. Kevin Landry AB '66

Following Kevin’s diagnosis with lung cancer in 2010, he became committed to advancing research that could generate more effective treatments for others facing this devastating disease. Through the extraordinary generosity of family, friends, and colleagues at TA Associates, the Landry Cancer Biology Consortium was created to honor Kevin’s life and legacy.

The Landry family, including Barrie and daughters Kimberly Gwinn Landry AB ’93, EdM ’01 and Jennifer Landry Le AB ’99, maintains an active connection to the Landry Cancer Biology Consortium—supporting Kevin’s vision of a world without cancer.

Support

In addition to generous gifts from family, friends, and colleagues of C. Kevin Landry to establish the Landry Cancer Biology Consortium, further support for cancer biology programming at Harvard comes from the Karin Grunebaum Cancer Research Foundation, established in 1958 in loving memory of Karin Grunebaum by her husband, Fritz Grunebaum, in order to invest in researchers who have made cancer research their life’s work. At Harvard Medical School, the Foundation sponsors projects by junior faculty members and funds training programs for potential new cancer researchers. In 2017, The Karin Grunebaum Poster Competition became an annual highlight of the Landry Cancer Biology Consortium Spring Symposium.

If you would like to support our goal, we invite you to make a gift to the Landry Cancer Biology Consortium.
