Rachel Hongo

Smiling Woman with long hair holding a small tank with zebrafish

Program: Biological and Biomedical Sciences
Lab: Leonard Zon

Rachel is a 5th year Ph.D. student in the BBS program, and in the Zon lab, she's researching tumor initiation using zebrafish models of melanoma. She is particularly interested in why only a subset of oncogenically competent melanocytes transform and how secreted growth factors in the local skin microenvironment influence that fate.

Her thesis work is supported by a Ruth L. Kirschstein NRSA for Individual Predoctoral Fellows (F31) Award from the National Cancer Institute. She is also a member of Harvard's Leder Human Biology and Translational Medicine program, which complements her goal of bridging basic discovery and clinical impact.

Rachel became involved with the LCBC Student Steering Committee to help foster community among current students and alumni through peer advising and resources for grant writing.

What is your favorite form of exercise? I danced a lot growing up, and I really appreciate dance as both fun and great exercise! I really enjoy the ballet and contemporary classes at the Harvard Dance Center. I've also started going line dancing with some friends!

What is one thing that instantly makes your day better? This is only applicable in the spring-summer, but I have a tiny balcony with a couple tomato plants, and I water them every day and enjoy watching their growth and resilience.

What's your go-to coffee/ tea order? I'm a big fan of strawberry mochas! So much so that I got the same strawberry syrup that my local coffee shop uses.

Fiction or nonfiction? Usually fiction! I've started reading ebooks on my phone when commuting on the bus/ T, and they've been a great way to mentally unwind.

If you were a piece of lab equipment, which would you be? My initial idea is a multi-channel pipette, but I can't really explain why

Would you rather travel back in time to meet your ancestors or the future to meet your descendants? I would want to go to the future to meet my descendants but mostly because I want to see what that world is like!

If you weren't a scientist, what would you be? Maybe a dentist- I'm one of the few people who loves going to the dentist.

What is something that you collect? Postcards, magnets of license plates, concert posters, fun socks
