Student Advising

***  INCOMING GRADUATE STUDENTS INTERESTED IN CANCER BIOLOGY ARE HIGHLY ENCOURAGED TO SETUP AN INITIAL STUDENT ADVISING MEETING WITH JELENA PATRNOGIĆ  ***

Message from Jelena -
My main goal for these meetings is to be your resource and a sounding board, and offer you feedback and advice.

Hopefully, I will be able to provide you with advice and support you need, and if not, I will work on finding you the right folks who can! Keep in mind that around you, your program leadership, senior students in cancer biology and your home programs, as well as other members of the community are happy to talk to you.

Here are some of the things that we can talk about -

  • Navigating science – how to balance different projects, how to approach conversations when things are not working
  • Getting the mentoring you need from your PI, DAC members, and others
  • Professional development
  • Career goals and ways to explore them
  • Time & project management – setting goals and accountability
  • Advice on teaching and/or mentoring and available opportunities
  • Balancing work and life as a graduate student
  • Anything else you’d like to talk about!

Anything we discuss, I will keep private. However, the two exceptions (things that I am not allowed to keep private) are concerns around sexual and gender-based harassment or mental health emergencies. If you would like to talk to someone who can keep these things confidential, there are resources at the University you can connect with such as:
CAMHS – https://camhs.huhs.harvard.edu
SHARE – https://oge.harvard.edu/crisis-support
The Ombuds – https://hms.harvard.edu/departments/ombuds-office
Harvard Chaplains – https://chaplains.harvard.edu
Or, you can find a full list of resources here – https://oge.harvard.edu/confidentiality-nutshell
