Journal Club

The purpose of the LCBC journal club is to give students in the LCBC community the opportunity to share and hear about recent and/or foundational papers in cancer biology. For those who don’t have time to keep up with all the current (or prior) literature, this is a way to learn about key advances in the field in a focused, student-friendly setting.

A typical journal club will run about an hour, with 30 minutes for presentation of the paper and the remaining time for group discussion. For now, the journal club will be held virtually to gauge interest, with the potential to transition to in-person meetings if turnout is positive.

The LCBC Journal Club is designed to support core skills in graduate training, including:

  • Critically reading and evaluating primary research papers
  • Explaining complex figures and methods clearly to your peers
  • Leading and participating in group discussions
  • Asking and answering questions in a supportive, student-only environment
  • Connecting new findings to your own research interests

Whether you are presenting or just attending, journal club is a low-pressure way to stay current with the literature and practice scientific communication.

Interested in presenting? Students are encouraged to present papers they find exciting, confusing, or especially important for cancer biology. More information about the schedule, presentation guidelines, and how to sign up to present will be posted soon.

If you’re interested in keeping up with cancer biology literature, improving your discussion and presentation skills, and engaging with a community of peers, the LCBC Journal Club is a great place to start.
